Widening The Lens: Fostering Empathy and Emotional Literacy Through Art Making and Reflective Practice in Elementary Settings
Dr. Jan MacLean
ABSTRACT:
There is promising evidence that engagement with art making and reflective practice in the form of writing, drawing and discussion can be effective in developing emotional intelligence and empathetic connections for students in early elementary grades. Current theory and research contend emotional literacy enhances academic and social outcomes, supports mental health, reduces behavioral problems, and promotes compassion and empathy. The integration of reflective practice and art exploration within classroom curriculum provides a valuable approach to deepening students’ understanding of themselves and others while encouraging a sense of individual well-being and promoting social inclusion. This paper will discuss findings from the “Encouraging Empathy through the Arts” study conducted with Grades three and four students over a twelve-week period. It is hoped that findings from this study contribute to the growing body of research supporting the view that reflective practice and art education can play a significant role in developing emotional literacy and compassionate relationships for younger students.
