Exploring Primary School Teaching Professionals’ Perceptions Towards Integrating Artificial Intelligence-driven Chatbots in Primary Multilingual Education: Insights from Using Openai’s Chatgpt
Lynn (Ruoxuan Li)
ABSTRACT:
This study investigates the perceptions of primary school teaching professionals, including both in-service teachers and trainees, on using ChatGPT to support multilingual education in Fryslân, Netherlands. This region is known for its complex linguistic diversity and commitment to educational innovation. The research employs the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) and the concept of affordance to explore how ChatGPT is perceived in pedagogical activities and what factors influence these views. Through a survey distributed on Qualtrics, 136 valid responses were collected. Results indicate a generally positive outlook among teaching professionals, who view ChatGPT as a valuable tool with high ratings for perceived enjoyment and a strong behavioral intention to use it. However, concerns were noted around ChatGPT’s content accuracy and logical reasoning abilities. Key factors that shape teachers’ perceptions include the level of technical support available, the professional roles of users, teacher autonomy, and the cultural context within which the technology is used. The study concludes that targeted professional development is essential for maximizing the effective use of ChatGPT in multilingual classrooms. It also emphasizes the need for further research into challenges such as non-English training data and the impact of instructional languages on ChatGPT’s effectiveness. Overall, this research provides insights into preparing future educators for AI-driven teaching and aims to inspire more professionals to engage in multilingual education, ultimately enhancing student experiences in diverse linguistic environments.
