Etiology of Motivations Behind Land Grants for the Establishment of Public Higher Education Institutions in Ghana
Kwame Boakye-Yiadom
ABSTRACT:
The article explores the motivations behind land transfers for public higher education institutions (PHEIs) in Ghana, focusing on the role of land grantors, motivations, barriers, financial and non-financial expectations, and strategies for landowner participation. The study uses a constructivist worldview, qualitative approach, and case study research design to interview 11 key informants. Findings suggest that land grantors are respected community residents, and land grant schemes are fraught with financial and non-financial expectations. The study suggests that government policies should reinforce legal frameworks, improve monitoring and reporting, and establish landbanks for increased public engagement. Scholars can also create a continuity theory using social exchange theory. The article recommends exploring land grants’ sustainability in Ghana’s PHEIs for knowledge.
