Inclusive Language Euniversals in Drafting Administrative Texts

Vasiliki Chelidoni

ABSTRACT:

The abstract entitled “Inclusive Language EUniversals in Drafting Administrative Texts” presents the gender-inclusive techniques and gender-neutral terms EU institutions adopt. In brief, no matter which of the EU drafting languages is used, the abstract highlights the techniques and terms that are common between the most implemented EU inclusive language guides, i.e., between the “Gender-Neutral Language in the European Parliament” and the “Inclusive Communication in the General Secretariat of the Council of the European Union”. In particular, by identifying and analyzing widely accepted practical tips addressed mainly to authors and translators of the administrative services of the EU institutions, this presentation aims to facilitate the use of inclusive language whenever drafting EU working documents or papers. Overall, the comprehensive recording of the common EU inclusive language guidelines encourages EU institutions’ authors and translators to become more aware of linguistic gender sensitivity and avoid gender-biased word choices in an attempt to promote gender equality in all forms of administrative communication.
