ABSTRACT:

The concept of new forms of work, such as hybrid, remote, gig, and freelancing, is characterized by ongoing variations in the conventional and advanced working modes. In recent research, new forms of work have gained significant attention due to positive impacts on the employee’s health, well-being, and experience. The conceptualization of hybrid, gig, remote, and freelancing remains elusive despite enhanced relevance to mental and health well-being. This article aims to investigate the comprehensive and nuanced understanding of new forms of work, such as hybrid, remote, gig, and freelancing, contributing to employees’ health, well-being, and experience. We draw on an extensive literature search for the conceptual clarity of new working application forms. The literature search proposes the changes in the employees’ health, well-being, and experience under hybrid, remote, gig, and freelancing encompassing dynamics across three dimensions: physical and mental health impact, work engagement and productivity, job security, and growth opportunities. We re-explain key findings within the Human Resources Management domain based on previous literature and dynamic three-dimensional definitions of non-traditional working models, i.e., hybrid, remote, gig, and freelancing. This article also illustrates how our framework and theories, i.e., Self-Determination Theory and Job Demand Resource Model, clarify the previously vague concepts of hybrid, remote, gig, and freelancing. This re-explanation emphasizes the theoretical contribution of new forms of work influencing the employees’ health, well-being, and experience and explores new research findings.
