Identification of Efficient and Inefficient Workers on the Basis of Their FFPQ Scores

ABSTRACT:

In many manufacturing companies where manual tasks such as assembly are still performed by hand, it is as important as ever to improve worker performance. As there is a distinct lack of articles investigating the impact of worker aptitude on their performance in assembly operations, we conducted a series of experimental studies to investigate the impact of worker aptitude. It was found that two-thirds of the variance in assembly times was determined by the workers, with worker aptitude or ability having a stronger influence than experience. It is very important to measure worker aptitude and to put the right workers in the right places. This study uses assembly time to quantitatively measure a worker’s performance and the Five Factor Personality Questionnaire (FFPQ) scores to measure the worker’s five factor personality. We collected data from 249 workers and conducted clustering analysis and then considered how workers’ five super traits: extraversion, affiliation, control, emotionality and playfulness significantly affect their performance in assembly work. This study focuses on clarifying the difference between efficient and inefficient workers, and aims to provide some key points for practitioners to make assembly operations more effective.
