Environmental Management in A Seaport in The Context of Sustainable Development Challenges
Dr. Sławomir Skiba
ABSTRACT:
The article addresses the critical role of environmental management in seaports, focusing on the challenges posed by sustainable development. As seaports are essential hubs for global trade, they also contribute significantly to environmental degradation through pollution, habitat disruption, and high energy consumption. Sustainable development requires the integration of environmental, social, and economic objectives, posing complex challenges for port authorities aiming to balance operational efficiency with ecological responsibility. This paper explores the key environmental pressures associated with seaport operations, such as air and water pollution, waste generation, and greenhouse gas emissions. It examines how sustainable port management practices, including the implementation of green technologies, circular economy principles, and renewable energy sources, can mitigate these impacts. The study also highlights the role of international regulations and frameworks, such as the International Maritime Organization’s (IMO) guidelines and the European Union’s Green Deal, in shaping environmental policies within ports. Through case studies of leading European ports, the paper evaluates the effectiveness of various strategies in promoting environmental sustainability. The analysis shows that proactive measures such as eco-friendly infrastructure investments, emissions monitoring, and stakeholder engagement are crucial for achieving long-term sustainability goals. However, the paper also identifies gaps in policy enforcement, financial constraints, and technological barriers that hinder progress. In conclusion, the research emphasizes the need for a comprehensive, multi-stakeholder approach to environmental management in seaports. This includes collaborative efforts between port authorities, shipping companies, policymakers, and local communities to ensure that economic growth is aligned with environmental protection and sustainable development objectives.
The research tool used in the article is a case study and the subject of the study is seaports in Poland.
