Engaging Engineering Students Through Active Learning Approaches
Falah Awwad
ABSTRACT:
This presentation explores the implementation of active learning strategies in undergraduate electronics courses to improve student engagement, conceptual understanding, and academic performance. The traditional lecture-based model, commonly used in foundational engineering education, often fails to adequately support students in developing practical skills and critical thinking abilities. In this study, we introduced and evaluated various active learning techniques—such as flipped classrooms, think-pair-share, collaborative problem-solving sessions, and mini-projects—within a core electronics course. A comparative analysis was conducted between a control group using conventional teaching methods and an experimental group employing active learning. The results revealed significant improvements in student outcomes, including increased participation, better exam scores, and enhanced ability to apply theoretical knowledge in practical scenarios. This work provides a practical framework and instructional insights for educators seeking to transform their electronics courses into more student-centered learning environments.
