Understanding the Career Choices of International School Leaders

Dr. Ligia Alberto

ABSTRACT:

This presentation shares findings from a qualitative research study that explores the career decisions of international Heads of Schools who began their journeys as teachers—both in their home countries and overseas. Through interviews with leaders across multiple regions, the study examines what motivates educators to transition from teaching to top leadership roles abroad. Themes such as professional autonomy, personal fulfillment, global citizenship, and mission alignment emerged as central to their decision-making. This presentation will offer insights into leadership mobility, the role of experience across contexts, and recommendations for developing future leaders in international education.
