Standardizing ESP Pedagogy: A Critical Evaluation of Language Training for Law Enforcement Cadets
Michail St. Fountoulakis
ABSTRACT:
This article critically evaluates the English Language and Police Terminology (Volumes I, II, & III) textbook, developed for second- to fourth-year cadets at the Hellenic Police Officers School. Divided into three proficiency modules (B1, B2-C1, C2), the textbook offers standardized ESP materials tailored to law enforcement needs, incorporating scenario-based learning and specialized terminology. Unlike previous ad-hoc methods relying on inconsistent, fragmented materials, this structured curriculum fosters comprehensive skill development. The evaluation, involving 30 advanced-level cadets, assessed adaptability to policing contexts, vocabulary comprehensiveness, and scenario-task effectiveness. Grammar was measured through tense, modals, conditionals, and advanced clauses within policing lexicons, while vocabulary retention was evaluated via targeted exercises. Data showed a 20% improvement in grammar accuracy and a 25% increase in vocabulary retention over a 12-week period using pre- and post-module tests. Qualitative feedback highlighted scenario-based tasks, such as simulated police interviews, as engaging yet challenging due to complex terminology and time constraints, indicating a need for additional scaffolding. Cadets valued the realism of scenarios but found some tasks overly scripted, potentially limiting spontaneous critical thinking. Compared to previous methods with inconsistent outcomes, this textbook demonstrated measurable improvements and received positive reception, though cadets suggested incorporating multimedia resources for enhanced engagement. As Greece’s first systematic ESP curriculum for police cadets, it offers a model for structured, scenario-driven language learning, with potential for broader adaptation in uniformed academies. This critical evaluation sets the stage for future large-scale studies and adaptations for non-English-speaking police institutions.
