Professional Collaboration in Nursing Teams: Implications for Educational Practice
Mirko Prosen, Sabina Ličen
ABSTRACT:
In healthcare settings, teamwork is increasingly essential due to rapid developments and the need to achieve goals effectively. Proper education and training of healthcare professionals play a crucial role in fostering effective teamwork. This study investigates factors influencing and explaining differences in the success of nursing teams in primary healthcare. The descriptive non-experimental quantitative research utilized the Slovenian ACE-15 questionnaire, with a reliability score of Cronbach α = 0.81. Ninety-five healthcare employees participated, with data collected via an online survey in February 2023. Analysis included descriptive statistics, Mann-Whitney U test, Kruskal-Wallis H test, and linear regression. Findings show that male respondents (p < 0.05), younger employees, those with higher education, and smaller teams reported better teamwork and team affiliation, though differences were not statistically significant (p ≥ 0.05). The ACE-15 questionnaire highlighted teamwork deficiencies and suggested areas for improvement, such as relationships, communication, motivation, and rewards. Enhancing these factors can improve collaboration among nursing teams, which can significantly influence the planning and implementation of educational programs for healthcare professionals, ensuring they are better prepared for effective teamwork and collaborative practice in their professional roles. Integrating teamwork training early in medical education, as well as ongoing reinforcement, is vital for developing interpersonal skills, leadership, and reducing burnout, ultimately leading to improved patient care and satisfaction.
