Pre-school Teachers and Children’s Interaction in the Classroom Activities: Facilitating Play in the Early Years
Soba Balasundaram
ABSTRACT:
For children to learn and grow, teachers and children need to have positive and supportive interactions. These interactions create a foundation for children’s social-emotional growth and prepare them for future learning experiences. The current implementation of educational change emphasises the significance of supporting interactions between teachers and children in the development of classroom activities. Moreover, recognising the importance of early childhood education has highlighted the need for early childhood teachers and children to interact and effectively engage in the learning processes of young children. This research examines the frequencies of children’s play activities, as well as collaboration and assistance interactions between teachers and children within these activities. The study utilised a mixed-method approach, collecting both quantitative and qualitative data through a survey conducted with early childhood education teachers. The survey examines various aspects, including the teachers’ demographic profiles and job satisfaction. Furthermore, it highlights the factors that interact between preschool teachers and children during classroom activities. The research was conducted in the Eastern Province of Sri Lanka, with survey participants selected from preschools in the Manmunai Southwest Education/D.S. Division of Batticaloa District, Sri Lanka. Several factors facilitate play in the early years, including inadequate play-based classroom activities, insufficient technological aids, and the absence of a standard curriculum. Finally, the research recommends that early childhood education teachers maintain a focus on their play-based classroom activities.
