Conducting Applied Research to Impact Education
Dr. Bunnie Claxton
ABSTRACT:
Applied research is a method in which the researcher seeks to improve outcomes in education by offering solutions for a variety of problems in almost every educational setting. Applied research is practical. Educators may use is to improve academic achievement, assessment outcomes, social skills, student attendance, challenging behaviors, teaching skills, teacher retention, or a variety of other problems found in an educational setting. Applied research offers educators the opportunity to make improvements by solving a real-world problem through practical research that involves participants who are knowledgeable about the problem. Applied research is defined as conducting research using a multi-method design that incorporates both qualitative and quantitative data collection and analysis strategies for the purpose of solving a problem or making educational improvements. Applied research does not seek to fill a gap in existing literature; rather, it seeks to offer recommendations to solve a problem or make improvements in existing practice. The key to applied research is solving problems through the dissertation research process.
