How Employability Within The Curriculum Can Help Develop Study Identity

Dr. Alex Kay, Mike Green & Thomas Legge

ABSTRACT:

The purpose of this study is to explore how the MSc Sports Management at Hartpury University supports the development of student identities through an embedded, practice-based curriculum. In recent years, the landscape of higher education has seen a growing emphasis on graduate employability and identity formation as key indicators of programme success and engagement (Mili and Towers, 2022; Tomlinson, 2012). This study examined how a deliberately designed postgraduate programme with assessments rooted in consultancy and live industry projects can act as a tool for identity development within postgraduate students to enhance employability ready for industry. The findings indicate highlight how these experiences helped build a sense of purpose and belonging within the sports industry, with many graduates establishing businesses or securing roles that align with their growing identity as practitioners. Embedded throughout the programme is also a commitment to social impact and sustainable community engagement, exemplified by successful funding bids such as the £116,000 Levelling Up Fund, which supports paid placements and studentships. This not only reinforces students’ self-perception as valued contributors but also strengthens their resilience, adaptability, and readiness for graduate employment.
