ABSTRACT:

The acceleration of the transition to distance education in educational institutions with the COVID-19 pandemic has caused various difficulties in teaching processes. Especially in application-oriented programs, the fact that the courses are also given by distance education has made these difficulties more evident. Within the scope of a project planned to propose a solution to this problem, it is aimed to examine the experiences and difficulties of academicians in Computer Programming programs in vocational school in the distance education process. In addition, the opinions of academicians on the possible effects of the flipped classroom model supported by three-dimensional (3D) virtual environments on these difficulties were revealed. The research is based on a case study. An online form was sent via e-mail to 172 academicians from 74 cities in Turkey who work in Computer Programming programs. As a result of the analysis, it was determined that the most difficult courses in distance education in the Computer Programming program were “Introduction to Algorithms and Programming”, “Graphics and Animation” and “Computer Networks and Communication”, respectively. Academics frequently mentioned problems such as insufficient interaction in applied courses, lack of technical infrastructure and inadequacies in feedback processes. In addition, the potential of using 3D virtual environments to create positive effects such as making the distance learning process more tangible, ensuring active participation of students and supporting peer learning was emphasized. Furthermore, it was predicted that the planned distance flipped classroom application would enrich the distance learning-teaching process and increase learning success by providing instant feedback.
