ABSTRACT:

As urbanization accelerates, enhancing residents’ sense of place in the context of urban renewal has become a key challenge, particularly in the redevelopment of neighborhood public spaces in old urban areas. This study focuses on Chengdu, China, to investigate how the attributes of neighborhood public spaces influence residents’ sense of place. This study adopts an analytical framework focused on livability and productivity, integrating questionnaire surveys and field investigations for data collection. Neighborhood communities were classified into four types based on public spatial attributes, and statistical tools such as SPSS and AMOS were employed to conduct factor analysis, variance analysis, and structural equation modeling (SEM) to analyze the mechanisms linking spatial attributes and residents’ sense of place. The results reveal that: (1) Both livability and productivity significantly affect residents’ sense of place, but the extent of influence varies across dimensions. (2) Comfort, infrastructure, and management have a significant positive impact on place dependence, while safety and management play a pivotal role in place attachment. (3) Residents with different demographic characteristics exhibit significant variations in their perception of the sense of place. Based on these findings, this study proposes practical recommendations, including strengthening the safety of public spaces, improving infrastructure and green environments, preserving historical and cultural heritage, and innovating community management models. This study not only enriches the theoretical understanding of the relationship between sense of place and urban renewal but also provides valuable policy insights for achieving sustainable urban development and fostering community harmony in practice.
