Elevating Education with AI: Exploring the Potential of AI on Teacher Professional Development
Professor Geoff Baker, Craig Lomas
ABSTRACT:
There is an increasing awareness that ‘traditional’ approaches to teacher development have little lasting impact on the professional practice of teachers or the learning experiences of their students, exemplified in the title of Opfer and Pedder’s (2012) article the ‘Lost Promise of Teacher Development in England’. The emergence of Artificial Intelligence offers a new vehicle for teachers to approach their practice, build professional communities and engage in research. The paper will consider some of the specific ways that Artificial Intelligence might be deployed to support teacher development, grounded in a survey of literature on this topic and an analysis of the experiences of teachers themselves. It concludes that this new technology, still underutilised and poorly understood in this field, has the potential to radically redefine the way that teachers work and think, opening the possibility for a revolution in teacher professional development.
