Constructing Connections: The Impact of LEGO® SERIOUS PLAY® on Communication Skills in Japanese Higher Education Contexts
Mark D. Sheehan
ABSTRACT:
The LEGO® SERIOUS PLAY® method is a facilitated approach to enhancing thinking, communication, and problem-solving. It is frequently employed within organizations, teams, and individuals. This presentation will demonstrate the application of this learning methodology across various Japanese university settings to bolster English communication skills. In Japan, students are mandated to study English as a Foreign Language (EFL) after a minimum of six years of prior instruction. Despite this extensive background, many students continue to face challenges in proficient spoken English. The root causes of this deficiency are diverse, encompassing pedagogical, cultural, and psychological factors. The presenter has focused on these areas, utilizing the LEGO® SERIOUS PLAY® method in courses, workshops, seminars, and events to address them. Japanese educational curricula at the middle and high school levels predominantly focus on grammar and examination preparation, providing limited opportunities for practical language application. Additionally, cultural norms often discourage standing out or deviating from group conformity, thus inhibiting risk-taking and active participation. The LEGO® SERIOUS PLAY® method fosters a psychologically safe environment that encourages students to express their opinions freely and significantly increase their English usage.
