Public attention, carbon emissions trading, and carbon-reduction effects
Mingyuan Han
ABSTRACT:
This paper constructs endogenous growth models to theoretically analyse the relationship between public environmental attention, carbon trading market and carbon emission intensity and innovatively uses the panel MIDAS estimation method to empirically test the theoretical results considering the lag of information transmission at the early stage of China’s carbon market. The results demonstrate that the lagged term of public attention has a significant inhibitory effect on carbon emission intensity, and the carbon trading market plays a significant mediating effect in the effect. Meanwhile, the effective ways of public attention on carbon market are market mechanism and administrative mechanism. Moreover, by comparing the coefficients of the panel MIDAS models with the low-frequency data panel models, it is found that both obtained the same signs of the explanatory variables, while the absolute values of the coefficients obtained from panel MIDAS models are smaller than those obtained from low-frequency data panel models.
