ABSTRACT:

There is a gap between the desirable project management knowledge and skills among graduates and the actual requirements of the practitioners. This paper reviews the effectiveness of a teaching and evaluation approach designed to create an effective project management learning environment at master level. The paper attempts to verify whether there is a relationship between previous project experience and the academic performance of a project management module that has been delivered at postgraduate level. The results suggest that with the use of a combination of assessment strategies that enabled sharing of project experience and the use of case studies, desirable learning outcomes can be achieved despite students not having previous project experience. If effective assessment strategies are in place, experienced students play a key role in sharing their tacit knowledge. The findings could be instrumental in enhancing teaching and assessment strategies in polarised batch of students with relevant work experience and those without.
