ABSTRACT:

This study assesses the efficacy of AI tools in enhancing linguistic abilities and intercultural communication within educational contexts. Utilizing a mixed-methods approach, it encompasses a quantitative survey of 200 educators, students, and app developers, alongside qualitative interviews, offering a comprehensive evaluation of specific AI technologies such as the language learning app Duolingo, translation tools, and conversational platforms like ChatGPT. The findings reveal significant engagement, with 100% of educators incorporating AI tools into their pedagogy, demonstrating a notable positive impact on language proficiency and cultural understanding. Specifically, the use of Duolingo in a multicultural classroom setting in Toronto and ChatGPT in an intercultural exchange program in Berlin serve as exemplary case studies that underscore these tools’ roles in facilitating personalized and immersive learning experiences. Educators reported an average effectiveness rating of 3.8, while students rated their effectiveness higher at 4.1. However, the study identifies a need for increased interactive and culturally immersive content and advocates for the strategic integration of AI tools into language curricula and the enhancement of teacher training programs. It emphasizes the importance of ethical considerations, including data privacy and equitable access, and highlights the need for measures to mitigate potential biases within AI applications. Acknowledging limitations such as potential biases in self-reported data and the evolving nature of technology, the study suggests future research directions, emphasizing the importance of longitudinal studies to explore the long-term impact of AI on language learning and intercultural competencies.
