Digital Innovation and Performance in a Public Sector Para-Military Organisation: Unveiling the Mediating mechanisms of Transformational Leadership

ABSTRACT:

This study was carried out to assess the influence of digital innovation on organisational performance through transformational leadership in a public sector para-military agency in Nigeria. The research questions were: what is the influence of digital innovation on organizational performance? Secondly, what is the mediating effect of transformational leadership on the relationship between digital innovation and organizational performance? The study was underpinned by the dynamic capabilities theory
The quantitative survey research used questionnaire as instrument for survey on 222 respondents drawn from high-ranking officers of the Nigeria immigration service Headquarters in Abuja and Lagos Nigeria. The data collected was analysed using inferential statistical techniques of Partial Least Squares-Structural Equation Modelling (Smart-PLS) to test the significance of digital innovation dimensions on organizational performance and the mediation of transformational leadership
The findings revealed that, the hypotheses demonstrate statistically significant and positive relationships, emphasizing the strategic influence of digital innovation to drive organizational performance with the model (β = 0.360, t = 10.024, f 2 =0.166, R2 =0.452, Adjusted R2 = 0.447 and р ˂ 0.05.) This indicates substantial explanatory power and the model’s predictive capability. The mediation of transformational leadership also regained significance, indicating partial mediation
These results offer strategic insights into the valuable relevance of digital innovation to drive organizational performance in the public sector. Transformational leadership emerged as a critical determinant of an enhanced performance. Finally, the study holds significant implications for management decisions especially on the deployment of digital innovation technologies on organizational performance in the public sector.
