Asst. Prof. Ana Chankvetadze
ABSTRACT:
To avoid using L1 in group-based communicative English classroom, especially in higher education level, is full of challenges for students as well as for teachers who plans lesson based on effective studying methods and ways. Teacher’s role as the facilitator or/and group process manager in these type of activities is not always productive and useful and less promotes students usage of L2. Reviewing various literature, studies and researches on this topic Calderbank, A. (1997). Cole S. (1998), Storch, N., & Wigglesworth, G. (2003), Fuente M. (2008), Yildiz M. and Yeslyurt S. (2016), Graham A. (2018), Yüzlü M.Y. and Atay D. (2020), Akazim M. (2023), the researcher, who is also the lecturer at one of the universities in Georgia, began to find solution how to deal with this challenge. In the paper is presented a small scale experimental study which aimed to find the best solution to promote using less L1 during group-based communicative English classroom. The researcher gave to one of the student the role of the observer and the facilitator who also helped doing the task. There is presented the results of this experiment, comments of the students, influence and effects of this on students’ behaviour as well as their level of usage L1 in communicative group-based activities. In brief, this experiment was one of the first step from the researcher side to copy with these mentioned challenges which needs more study and careful research for future studying process.
