ABSTRACT:

Abstract
This study aimed to design supplementary English-speaking materials for Grade X Accounting students at SMKN 1 Jogonalan to meet their specific learning needs. The research followed a Research and Development (R&D) approach, adapting Jolly and Bolitho’s (1998) materials development framework. The steps included conducting a needs analysis, designing course grids, developing the first draft of materials, evaluating them, and revising the final version. The needs analysis, conducted through questionnaires to 60 students and 3 interviews with students and teachers, revealed that students required English-speaking skills for both classroom assignments and future career opportunities in accounting. They expressed a preference for learning materials that incorporated real-life, accounting-related scenarios. Based on these findings, three units of task-based instruction (TBI) materials were developed, aligned with the Curriculum 3013 and designed to improve students’ communicative competence in English. Each unit included engaging tasks that encouraged active participation and problem-solving in a professional context. The materials were evaluated by an expert in materials development, focusing on content, language, presentation, and layout. The final evaluation score was 3.67 out of 4.0, categorizing the materials as “very good” and suitable for use in vocational schools. This research highlights the significance of tailored English for Specific Purposes (ESP) materials in enhancing students’ proficiency and motivation, especially in vocational education settings where career readiness is critical.
