AI Ethics in the Lens of Posthumanism

ABSTRACT:

This paper attempts to address the challenges related to AI ethics by focusing on the concept of ‘ethical AI’, which posits AI as an ethical agent, and exploring the distribution of ethical roles between humans and AI. The research questions are based on the following three exploratory inquiries: a) Can AI replace human roles? b) Can AI possess ethical capacities equivalent to human ethical judgment? c) Can AI become an equal ethical agent to humans? Based on the exploratory questions mentioned above, this paper establishes two key research hypotheses: First, advanced artificial intelligence capable of replacing human roles can become an independent ethical agent as it performs autonomous judgments and actions. Second, a post-humanist ethical perspective is necessary as the philosophical foundation for AI as an ethical agent. To discuss these hypotheses, this paper reviews the latest issues and research trends in AI ethics and, based on this, presents the conceptual background, ethical validity, and practical considerations of AI ethics grounded in post-humanism, which is a non-anthropocentric worldview.
