Grace Roselina Situmorang, Deni Kurniawan
ABSTRACT:
This research aims to analyze the factual condition of local wisdom related to nutmeg cultivation in Fakfak City, West Papua, a nutmeg-producing area with almost 80 percent of its territory is endemic nutmeg forest. This research is the first step in developing a curriculum that integrates local wisdom related to nutmeg cultivation in learning Social Sciences (IPS) at the junior high school level. A quantitative approach was used with data collection methods through a Likert scale-based questionnaire. The study was designed to evaluate social studies teachers’ understanding and views on the importance of integrating local wisdom in the social studies curriculum. The results of the questionnaire showed that almost all junior high school social studies teachers understood the traditional techniques of nutmeg cultivation and agreed that the integration of this local wisdom is very important for the social studies curriculum. However, teachers face challenges in linking learning objectives with the local wisdom of nutmeg cultivation, as well as in applying the necessary innovative strategies, approaches and methods. These challenges include teachers’ ability to conduct effective evaluations and design lessons that integrate local potential in innovative ways. The findings emphasize the need for additional support for teachers in designing the curriculum to ensure that local wisdom and local potential can be optimally accommodated and implemented in junior secondary social studies learning.
