ABSTRACT:

Several recent studies have demonstrated mounting evidence suggesting a powerful connection between rhythm and the underlying cognitive processes related to early literacy development whereas the use of colours has also been reported to play a crucial role as instructional materials to capture the attention of young learners on specific information. However, the promising findings corroborating the combination of rhythm and colours as potential instructional materials in language classroom designed for grade schoolers are not well reported. Therefore, this study aims (1) to investigate the combination of rhythm and colours as potential instructional materials in language learning settings tailored for grade schoolers and its effect on the attention and vocabulary retention performance; and (2) to elucidate the connection between the combination of the two aforementioned variables and the vocabulary retention performance. Participants (N=11) enrolled in Bandekdee 2 School, Chaiyaphum province. A one-day rhythmic activity, divided into a morning session and an afternoon session; one-hour slot each, included a rhythmic-play exercise designed incorporating the use of both rhythm and colours. The paired t-test was used for analysis, with a 95% confidence interval. The results support the combination of rhythm and colours as potential instructional materials in language learning, albeit the support stands with a caution against exercising such combination after time interval.
