ABSTRACT:

This research project aims to address the critical need to support Tamil school teachers in Malaysia, particularly in rural areas, in developing effective English language teaching materials. Tamil schools, a vital part of the vernacular education system, play a key role in preserving Malaysia’s cultural and linguistic diversity. However, these schools face significant challenges in teaching English due to inadequate resources and professional development, especially in rural regions. Hitomi and Masuhara (2018) emphasize the importance of well-designed materials and tasks in improving language learning outcomes. Additionally, Mahamood and Othman (2019) highlight that culturally relevant teaching materials significantly enhance student engagement and achievement. The Malaysian Education Blueprint 2013-2025 also underscores the need to improve English language performance in rural schools. This study advocates for a comprehensive support for teachers by employing a qualitative study involving classroom observations, semi-structured interviews and focus group discussions to identify the specific needs and challenges faced by English teachers in Tamil schools. These insights will inform targeted professional development, resource allocation, and collaborative material development initiatives. By enhancing the quality of English education, this initiative aims to promote educational equity and ensure that children from rural communities receive the same opportunities for academic success as their urban counterparts (Thirusanku & Melor, 2012).
