Effects of Climate Change on Meat and Crop Production

Jan P. Voon

ABSTRACT:

This paper examines the impact of temperature shocks on agricultural exports, specifically differentiating between meat and crop-based products. We find that temperature shocks have a more adverse effect on crop-based production in developing countries compared to meat-based exports. Our findings have practical implications for farmers, suggesting a shift in production mix towards animal farming. However, this shift coupled with the persistent adverse effects of temperature on cropping may harm global health if consumption trends shift unintentionally towards more meat-based and fewer fiber-rich diets.
