International Economic Sanctions and Macroeconomics: Meta-Regression Analysis
Zymantas Baranauskas
ABSTRACT:
This paper surveys and meta-analyses the literature which examines the effect of international sanctions on selected macroeconomic aggregates using Protocol of the Meta-Analysis in Economics Research-network. I econometrically investigate the t-statistic and regression coefficients from various economic papers to capture and meta-analyze the impact of sanctions as taken from Global sanctions database. My findings are threefold: set of macroeconomic variables in the literature are analyzed very actively (GDP, labor market dynamics) and some not analyzed at all. Moreover, sanctions, after their introduction, do tend to distort the macroeconomic activity, however it is difficult to quantify the actual result. Lastly, funnel plot indicates medium to strong publication bias.
