The Long-Term Psycho-Emotional Influence OF Teacher Behaviour ON Learners In The Free State Province
Prof. Dr. Christa Beyers
ABSTRACT:
The short-term influence of teachers is well-documented within the literature. The long-term influence of teachers however has received little attention, specifically regarding teacher influences in the psycho-emotional domain of learners. This report serves to answer the question: What is the perceived long-term impact of teachers on the psychological and emotional development of a child? This report is informed by qualitative findings from a sample of 115 teachers within the Free State Province, South Africa. Drawing on the findings, it is argued that if teachers are aware of the important non-academic role that they play, it can be an important step in protecting learners from life-long psycho-emotional scars. The results carry significant implications for in-service teachers and prospective teachers, with a specific focus on the transformation of the teaching profession.
