Jinhui Jiang
ABSTRACT:
Since the 2010s, the number of Chinese animation works has been growing at a record high in terms of both growth index and broadcast volume, and as one of the cores of ACG culture, animation has attracted the attention of many researchers. In past works, researchers have examined animations’ specific cultural elements or developing trends in the animation industry. Seldom explored the overall changes in animation and the reasons based on works’ data.
A quantitative study is conducted to find the ways of self-reinvention in Chinese animation. Considering that Bilibili is the most representative symbol of China’s subcultural community, this study collects all the broadcast data of Chinese animation works on bilibili, such as the number of plays and comments, as well as the tag words and profiles on the introduction pages of the works. The digital materials were processed by spss23.0 and the texts were processed by WordStat. By comparing and analyzing the data, this study attempts to discover the main changes in Chinese animation innovation and the reasons.
The study shows that since 2010 the themes of animation are diversifying, especially works with Chinese history as the overhead background are the most popular. In addition, Chinese animation are gradually moving away from juvenile drawing style, and the character styles are gradually maturing in terms of height, age or type. Based on the change of Chinese animation, the study visually presents the shift in the aesthetic trend of Chinese youth animation since the 21st century, whereby it helps to find the innovative path of Chinese animation in the new media era. These findings will provide a reference for further innovation in animation content, and enhance our understanding of subculture, which reflects changes of social culture and thoughts, helping to find a harmonious path of interaction between mainstream culture and subculture.
