Teaching English Academic Vocabulary in a Distinctly Multicultural Environment
Sara Fine-Meltzer
ABSTRACT:
A major stumbling block to reading comprehension in English is poor vocabulary. While it is often thought that academic vocabulary can, and most often does wait for university/college study, it is my contention that vocabulary can and ought to be actively taught much sooner. The subject of this paper is teaching vocabulary in an “old-fashioned” setting. The proposed setting is adaptable to all levels of English learning, but is particularly important for students who grew up in countries where the indigenous language or languages are written in non-European scripts. The paper also deals with the added difficulty of the multicultural classroom.
