The Paradox of Digital Engagement: Enhancing and Undermining Psychological Resilience
Donna L. Roberts
ABSTRACT:
This paper investigates the dual role of digital technologies and social media in shaping psychological resilience, offering a nuanced perspective on their capacity to both enhance and undermine mental health in the digital age. By integrating theoretical frameworks with empirical research, the manuscript explores how online communities and digital storytelling serve as vital sources of support and empowerment, facilitating connections and fostering a sense of belonging that is crucial for resilience. Conversely, it delves into the challenges posed by cyberbullying, information overload, and digital burnout, highlighting the negative impact these factors can have on individuals’ ability to cope with stress and adversity. The paper proposes a multi-faceted approach to developing digital resilience, emphasizing the importance of skills for managing digital stressors, the role of education and policy in supporting healthy digital engagement, and the critical support of community and family networks. Through the examination of case studies and policy initiatives, it underscores the need for collaborative efforts to enhance digital resilience. This comprehensive analysis aims to contribute to the broader discourse on mental health and well-being in the digital era, offering insights for researchers, policymakers, educators, and technology developers.
