ABSTRACT:

The post- monarchy era in Iraq (1958- ) has been turbulent and traumatic for the Iraqi intellectuals because of the successive repressive and authoritarian regimes. Consequently, some of them have sought exile worldwide to escape persecution and oppressive policies because of their political views and activities. The aim of this paper is to highlight the role of memory in the diasporic poetry of the Iraqi poet, Saadi Youssef, who was forced to leave Iraq because of the intimidating and hostile environment in Iraq. His diasporic poetry employs memories of his homeland in an attempt to heal the wounds of his diasporic experience like displacement, dislocation, foreignness and homelessness.
