From Social Voice to Algorithmic Visibility: A New Playbook for Women’s Leadership
Bin Gan
ABSTRACT:
This study builds upon a Sino-Finnish collaborative research project initiated a decade ago, re-examining conclusions about women’s leadership from the Web 2.0 era. Given that the rise of AI has triggered a transformation in women’s social impact—from ‘social voice’ to ‘algorithm-driven’ influence—this paper aims to identify and analyze new practical challenges from an algorithmic, ethical, and gender perspective. It further seeks to explore a new model for women’s leadership development in the age of AI. Drawing on a decade of fieldwork within the Dandelion Women’s Leadership Program involving over 1,500 women, this study employs a longitudinal case study methodology. It utilizes triangulation— combining in-depth interviews, quantitative analysis, and practical reflection—to dissect the complex dynamics of leadership transformation within the real-world context of the AI era. The findings indicate that traditional leadership models are insufficient for the AI era’s social ecosystem. Consequently, this study proposes a ‘New Model for Women’s Leadership in the AI Era,’ which cultivates a dual set of competencies: the ability to synergize effectively with AI and the capacity for ethical stewardship. This model is designed to amplify women’s social impact and promote a more equitable and sustainable future.
