ABSTRACT:

As China continues to play an increasingly pivotal role in global healthcare, English language proficiency, particularly in the area of vocabulary, becomes critical for nursing students. Extensive research has illuminated a significant interrelationship between motivation, expressed emotion, and the language learning process. However, existing studies have predominantly centered on the motivation to learn English and its overarching importance, leaving a noticeable gap in understanding the dynamic process of English language acquisition, particularly among nursing students. The present study undertook a qualitative exploration, delving into nursing students’ affective experiences and examining shifts in motivation during the intricate process of English vocabulary learning. The study’s findings unveiled a nuanced connection between motivation and the aesthetics and meaning embedded in the English language. Intriguingly, not all students derived pleasure from the vocabulary learning process; however, those who cultivated an appreciation for the inherent beauty of the language tended to exhibit superior learning outcomes. These insightful outcomes strongly suggest that nursing students possess an explicit awareness of the distinctive characteristics of the English language, particularly during the intricate journey of vocabulary acquisition. Moreover, they undergo unique emotional experiences associated with a sense of accomplishment and mastery in English vocabulary learning. This qualitative exploration contributes valuable insights to the broader discourse on language acquisition, emphasizing the need for a holistic understanding of motivational dynamics, especially in specialized fields such as nursing education.
