ABSTRACT:
School adjustment is a phenomenon that affects both academic, career and social emotional development of middle school students. It is seen that school adjustment, which is influenced by many different factors due to its comprehensive nature, is mostly focused on its relationship with school-related variables. In this study, the predictive power of family characteristics of middle school students in the transition period from childhood to adolescence on school adjustment was examined with regression analysis. The study group consisted of 5357 middle school students in Turkiye, of which 2790 (52.1%) were female and 22567 (47.9%) were male. Of these students, 1355 (25.3%) were fifth grade students, 1316 (24.5%) were sixth grade students, 1391 (25.9%) were seventh grade students and 1303 (24.3%) were eighth grade students. The mean age of the students was 11.82 (SD=1.185). School Adjustment Scale for Middle School Students, Career-Related Parental Support Scale, and Family Environment Scale was used in order to assess variables. According to the results of the study, school adjustment was predicted by the sub-dimensions of career-related parental support such as instrumental assistance, career-related modeling, verbal encouragement but not by emotional support and the cohesion dimension of the family environment scale. All variables together explain 24% variance of school adjustment.
