ABSTRACT:

In this study, it was aimed to determine the thoughts of vegans about eating meat and meat products. The sample of the study consisted of 21 vegan individuals living in Turkey. A semi-structured interview form developed by the authors for the qualitative phase of the project titled “Development, Validity and Reliability Study of Vegetarianism Adherence Scale” was used as a data collection tool. Grounded theory model, one of the qualitative research models, was used to analyse the data. The data were analysed using the constant comparative method. Although all of the participants declared that they were vegan for ethical reasons, 11 of the participants did not see a problem with buying/donating meat or meat products to a needy and hungry person, while 10 participants stated that they could not accept such a thing. One participant, who described meat and meat products as “parts of a living being whose heart has feelings and emotions”, reported that he buys hamburgers and cooks meat dishes for his child. One participant reported being disgusted by the sight of an animal “limb”, such as a chicken leg, rather than processed meat products. Three of the four participants who reported not being disgusted by meat have children who consume meat. As a result, it can be said that there is an inconsistency between the discourse and behaviour of the participants on issues related to the consumption, ordering and donation of meat and meat products.
