Sarah Saad Almaghrabi, Mona Taha Sabir
ABSTRACT:
The present research is meant to investigate the possible role and effects of Processing Instruction (PI), on the acquisition of the English simple past tense (ed) in EFL classrooms, the grammatical feature that is chosen for the study. As a sample for this study, 40 female Saudi students at preparatory year at King Abdulaziz university were divided into two groups: experimental and control, 20 for each all are native speakers of Arabic language. It aims to examine the possible effects that (PI) may have on experimental group retention of the grammatical feature (ed) on the level of immediate posttest & delayed posttest. In the study, the researcher uses structured input activities through three consecutive days for the intervention. Comparing Pretest, immediate Posttest and Delayed Posttest scoring of both groups, Results provide further evidence that (PI) is an effective instructional treatment in helping second language learners (L2) in making accurate form-meaning connection. Moreover, they show the effects that gains from (PI) were stronger on the immediate post-test than the delayed post-test, while the gains from the delayed post-test were smaller.
