Bulgarian Language Acquisition and The New Technologies
Velka Popova, Dimitar Popov
ABSTRACT:
The rapid development of modern technologies at the end of the 20th century and the first two decades of the 21st century resulted in radical changes in everyday life, society, people’s minds, and in the sciences that study them. The article highlights the projections of this process in modern research in the field of language ontogenesis. Within the holistic paradigm the focus is on the real child, and not some ideal being, which in turn necessitates solid empirical back-up of the proposed models. In this context, the use of computer systems for the accumulation of large amount of data, the convenient format for their presentation, and their automatic processing are conceptualised as a new stage in research, which does not only create new standards, but also limits possibility of the appearance of research myths. The article presents interactive research developments of pioneering importance for the Bulgarian developmental psycholinguistics, the applications of which would provide a solid and reliable empirical base for the verification of various psycholinguistic models and theoretical constructs, as well as a new, convenient standard of research. The new developments are illustrated through some demonstrations of the functionalities of the web-based learning system LABLASS (https://lablass.fhn-shu.com/) for studying word associations, and the first Bulgarian CHILDES corpus (https://childes.talkbank.org/access/Slavic/Bulgarian/LabLing. html).
