Language Behind the Badge: Unraveling the Sociolinguistic Dynamics of English Pedagogy in the Hellenic Police Officers School
Dr. Michail St. Fountoulakis
ABSTRACT:
This study at the Hellenic Police Officers School explores how English language proficiency impacts cadets’ professional identity, operational skills, and gender dynamics amid increasing international police cooperation and femicide cases. Using a mixed-methods approach, I gathered quantitative data from 102 cadets with diverse language backgrounds (beginner to proficiency levels). Qualitative insights were obtained through targeted questionnaires, in-depth interviews, and reflective essays on police-relevant topics. My findings reveal a strong correlation between advanced English proficiency and heightened professional confidence and operational effectiveness, crucial for international collaborations and addressing gender-based violence. Gender-based differences further emphasize the need for customized English as a Second Language (ESL) programs in law enforcement training. I propose tailored language programs that focus on gender-specific learning styles and operational contexts, equipping future officers with linguistic tools for effective cross-border collaboration and handling sensitive crimes like femicides. This approach has the potential to transform police training methodologies. While my study focuses on one institution, it encourages further research in diverse settings. I strictly adhered to ethical standards, ensuring informed consent and confidentiality. In conclusion, this research offers essential practical insights for language training in law enforcement and contributes to ESL education and sociolinguistics theory. It highlights the intersection of language proficiency with professional identity and operational efficiency in law enforcement. Emphasizing a learner-centered approach in ESL curriculum development aligns it with societal needs and policy implications, enriching theoretical understanding and practical application in global law enforcement training.
