ABSTRACT:

The social media usage has dramatically changed our lives. Human beings, as social animals, have quickly adapted to the new world of information technology as it fulfils their basic need for socialization. Problematic internet use has become serious issue in modern times. Very large numbers of young people are experiencing social media addiction and insomnia. The study is conducted to investigate the level of ubiquity of social media addiction among the university students in Lahore, Pakistan. The study intends to explore relationship between social media addiction, insomnia and academic performances of students; and explore relationship between social media addiction, insomnia and social life of students. An online survey was conducted through “google survey”. The study enlisted the participation of 300 university students from Lahore (male 165 and female 135). There is no relationship between gender and social media addiction or insomnia. Private university students had higher level of insomnia than public university students. Student suffering from insomnia were less satisfied with their social lives (number of friends). Seeping late (after 3 am) was the major contributing factor to insomnia. It is strongly recommended that government should formulate laws to ensure that universities carry out regular evaluations of students to detect social media addiction and insomnia; give information regarding risk factors and adverse effects to students. Moreover, social media platforms should develop strategy/ procedures to make their users aware of the risk factors associated with social media addiction including insomnia.
