Actions On Preventing Sexual Harassment in Higher Educational Institution for Sustainable Development: An Experience from University of Rajshahi

ABSTRACT:
Sexual harassment against women has been recognized as one form of violence. One in three women worldwide has reported experiencing physical or sexual harassment in her lifetime. The reasons for unequal power relations between men and women and the subordinate status of women are caused by the expression of violence in different forms. The deep-rooted gender inequalities and discrimination indeed make women helpless. As defined by the Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women, violence against women is a form of discrimination that seriously inhibits women’s ability to enjoy rights and freedoms on an equal basis with men. This research seeks to examine the constitutional and legal provisions of UN documents and how far those provisions are effectively implemented in higher educational spheres, specifically the University of Rajshahi. The research also scrutinizes whether gender discrimination and sexual harassment still prevail in those legal and procedural frameworks of the University and how such harassment can be reduced to ensure gender equality and achieve a safer or better campus for a sustainable future in higher educational development. This work will try to find out the key elements of the transformation of harmful masculinity for the sustainable development of higher educational institutions in Bangladesh.
