ABSTRACT:

AI language models and especially GPT Chat have invaded people´s lives without shame or warning. More than 100,000 Chat GPT users within two months shocked experts from various fields and also experts from education are dependent on increasing their competencies in communication with robots (computers). This contribution introduces a view and perception of ESP (English for Specific Purposes) experts on artificial intelligence and its usage in higher education. It maps the possibilities of using AI in higher education and illustrates how AI can assist to facilitate English development and enhance process of internationalisation of higher education. The paper also indicates possible negatives and abuses of AI and present findings of feasibility study carried out on a cohort of teachers and students of different universities in order to find the level of experience in using AI Chat GPT in higher education. It turns out that the development of AI – human-like communication with computers is unstoppable which triggers new requirements on disciplinary competencies for both teachers and students in higher education.
