Artificial Intelligence in Teaching EFL
Gábor Gutai
ABSTRACT:
This booming phenomenon of the 21st century called Artificial Intelligence (AI) provides a most needed fertile ground for teachers to try out new methods during the education process. So far, there have been attempts to implement AI into teaching English as Foreign Language (EFL). This study attempts to give a brief and valid overview of the position of AI in teaching EFL by summarizing six dominant forms of AI application: Neural Machine Translation Tools, Automatic Evaluation Systems, Intelligent Tutoring Systems (ITSs), AI Chatting Robots, Affective Computing (AC) in ITSs, and Intelligent Virtual Environment. The review also presents the current position of AI in teaching English in EFL classes. This review also presents challenges from technical and teachers’ perspectives, as well as possible future research directions, with the hope of new insights for future study.
