Božena Petrášová, Filip Sabo
ABSTRACT:
The article evaluates the impact and effectiveness of listen-and-repeat exercises on foreign-language education focusing on the psycholinguistic perspective in speech perception and production of one of the crucial prosodic features – intonation. The theoretical introduction presents the fundamental terms related to intonology, and demonstrates their application in practical examples from real situations. The paper analyses the parametres of categorical perception of intonation in recorded speech of English native speakers by English learners from Slovakia. The primary focus is on approaches which utilize speaking and listening skills for teaching a language, as they are closely related to categorical perception and production. The data obtained is further analyzed via the innovative method, software programme Praat. Based on the presented research findings, some practical recommendations for foreign language educators are suggested. The research results prove that listen-and-repeat exercises are an imperative aspect of language learning the productive skills, especially speaking. Repeated usage of listen-and-repeat exercises leads to the internalization of foreign intonation patterns by the learner. The findings and research conclusions which are presented not only verbally, but also in the form of graphs and evaluated statistically, are formulated to positively impact language teaching, and the educational process overall.
