Biotech companies posting on Twitter Amid The 2020 Pandemic: A Linguistic, Discursive, And Multimodal Study
Antonio Martínez-Sáez
ABSTRACT:
The biotechnology industry and the scientific and medical research studies carried out in this field have become more popular among the general population over the last few years. This has been mainly due to the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic and the rapid and immediate response that the companies of this sector tried to give to the global health crisis in search of new treatments. Biotechnology is present on Twitter, a social network which has also become an object of study, as it allows internet users to communicate through the exchange of short and quick messages usually accompanied by photos, videos, or links. The aim of the present study is to explore the most significant and predominant linguistic, discursive, and multimodal features of a selection of tweets published by ten different biotechnological companies from March to June of 2020. Results may be relevant for researchers interested in the communicative choices made by the users of a language through a social networking site as well as in the connections and effects these decisions may have.
