Metaphoric Idioms Based on Conceptual Metaphors and Issues of Their Equivalence (Using Examples from the Georgian and English Languages and Cultures)

As Kövecses and Szabó (1996, 330) point out, “An idiom is not just an expression that has a meaning that is somehow special concerning the meanings of its constituent parts, but it arises from our more general knowledge of the world (embodied in our conceptual system). In this theory, idioms are conceptual items based on certain cognitive mechanisms including cultural background knowledge materialized in conceptual semantic fields, including metaphor and metonymy.
This paper aims to explore the idioms containing the lexemes soul, eyes and head expressing emotions from the point of view of the Conceptual Metaphor Theory (CMT).
The data have been taken from the Georgian National Corpus and British National Corpus. The research was conducted in three stages. In the first stage, relevant idioms with the lexemes soul, eyes and head indicating emotions were identified and collected. In the second stage of the work, the data were grouped into conceptual metaphor models according to the emotion they express. (The metaphorical model SADNESS IS A LIQUID IN A CONTAINER includes several idioms, for instance, სული/გული სევდით აევსო (Geo, his /her soul/heart was full of sadness), My heart was full of sadness (Eng). At the final stage of the research, the identified metaphoric models were compared and contrasted cross-culturally and universal and variant models were identified.
