Integrating Sources in Academic Writing: A Focus on Citation Patterns and Authorial Voices
Dr. Attapol Khamkhien
ABSTRACT:
This study investigates the citation practices of Thai L2 students compared to professional writers in academic texts. The dataset included 404,793 words from research reports written by Thai L2 students in English and 833,809 words written by professional writers from prestigious journals in applied linguistics and English studies. All instances of citations produced by these two groups were collected, analysed and categorised based on their surface form and the degree of authorial voice. The results indicate that the Thai L2 students exhibit a relatively limited range of reporting structures and primarily using citations to demonstrate their knowledge of the topic and to refer to the data source. In particular, the quantitative and qualitative analysis revealed that the Thai L2 students tend to adopt a non-committal attitude and maintain distance from the cited materials. The pedagogical implications derived from this study highlight the need to improve citation practices and provide L2 students and novice writers with opportunities to have their research findings published in indexed journals.
